What is Dine & Dish?
Dine & Dish is a time for our staff to come together and learn as a professional community. We meet during our lunch hour and use this time to learn more about how we deliver literacy instruction to the students at KM. The idea of doing an "in-house" type of professional development was crafted by our building principal last year. We have planned on doing 4 sessions this year where teachers are invited to join us during their lunch time. Our sessions are not mandatory, but many teachers on our staff attend. We received great feedback from our staff last year and look forward to new topics for this 2014-15 school year. This year we welcome staff to present their own best literacy practices with others at our Dine and Dish sessions. Please let Kendra or Marjorie know if you would like to present to the staff.

Topic: What are the most effective reading strategies?
We discussed this topic at length, using the following powerpoint as our guide. Following our discussion, we unveiled our new resource bin that includes all types of graphic organizers that target specific reading strategies for teachers to use as an instructional tool. These bins are designed for teachers to use as a sharing device that can be "a work in progress" throughout the year. Take a look at the bins in our staff workroom and help yourself to as many graphic organizers as you would like!

Dine & Dish #2 (2013-14)- December 18, 2013
Topic - Developing Student Led Discussions in the Classroom
This session focused on using the strategies for student led discussions from the book (and workshop), Talk About Understanding by Ellin Keene. We used the attached articles to initiate and guide our discussion. Teachers were given the attached cheat sheet to use during the discussion to practice using the phrases that could be used with their students in the classroom. We had a great time walking in the shoes of our students, while passing a "talking ball" (or microphone) around our circle to get a feel for what student led discussions are like. The questions from the discussion were crafted by using the attached Bloom's Taxonomy handout. We've already had a few teachers try this strategy out in their classrooms with success! We can't wait to hear more stories!

Dine and Dish #3 (2013-14)- March 11, 2014
Topic: Daily 5 Survey Results and Points to Ponder
In this session, our discussion centered around our Tier 1 literacy block. We reviewed the results of a survey that was sent out to our staff in regards to the implementation of Daily 5 in their individual classrooms. We discussed the survey results and brainstormed possible topics for further professional development pertaining to the Daily 5. We scoured the internet and found an array of resources for Daily 5 that we felt would be helpful for teachers. Here are some of the resources that we included in this session...
* The Daily 5 Folder - This folder is a great resource for students to keep track of all loose papers that they may need for each Daily 5 component. It especially works well for those students that may struggle with organization! The directions to create this folder are in the following attachment...

* Daily 5 Rubrics - These are student self-assessment rubrics that can be a great tool to teach students independence with the Daily 5

* Daily 5 - Goal Setting Bookmarks -
These bookmarks are a great way for students to keep track of their reading goals. They can serve as a visual reminder for students during their reading, as well as a way to keep track of the strategies they practice throughout the year. You simply print a CAFE Menu and cut it into the four sections. When conferring with a student, select the bookmark that would align with their reading goal. Let the student highlight which strategy/skill they will practice on the bookmark.
* Coaching Toward a Target -
This is the conferring cheat sheet which can be found on the Daily CAFE website. It's a great reminder on how to coach a child during a 1:1 reading conference.

Dine and Dish #4 (2013-14) - April 28, 2014
Topics - Language Walls and Guided Reading
We are beginning to look ahead to next year and this session centered around the implementation of Language (or Word) Walls and Guided Reading in every classroom for the 2014-15 school year. We talked briefly about the purpose of language walls and the importance of having children interact with them on a daily basis. Many great ideas were shared among the staff and resources were discussed and distributed to expand our repertoire of using word walls in our classrooms.
We also engaged in a brief discussion about using Reading A-Z as an assessment tool for next year to fully implement Guided Reading. We shared the book The Next Step in Guided Reading, by Jan Richardson. If you are looking for a great summer book to read for professional development, we highly recommend this one!

Dine and Dish #5 (2013-14) - May 29, 2014
Topics: Scheduling the Literacy Block, Supporting the Barometer Students during Daily 5, and
Reading A-Z Benchmark Testing
For our final Dine and Dish for the 2013-2014 school year, we handed out sample literacy block schedules for grade level teams to look at and discuss for planning for the next school year.
We also handed out an article on how to help the barometer child who is having trouble staying on task during
Daily 5. Staff brainstormed and shared ideas on ways they help the barometer students in their classrooms.
Finally, we discussed that our classroom teachers will be doing running records using Reading A-Z Benchmark passages to level and monitor each of their students throughout the school year. We also shared some different ways that classroom teachers can store and organize their Reading A-Z passages. One way is to use a bin to organize materials and we had a sample one that Kendra and Marjorie put together. We put our bin in the teacher work room to be used as master copies for teachers to create their own to use in their classrooms. We also suggest seeing Lindsay Burns or Sherri Ballard to look at the binders they created to organize their Reading A-Z leveling materials.
